Frequently Asked Questions

A utility boiler is a large-scale system designed to generate steam for power plants, producing electricity for the grid. In contrast, an industrial boiler is smaller and used for direct heating applications in industries like food processing, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. While utility boilers typically run on coal, natural gas, or nuclear power, industrial boilers use natural gas, oil, or biomass for localized steam and heat generation.

A commercial boiler is designed for smaller-scale heating needs, such as in office buildings, hospitals, and schools, providing hot water or steam for HVAC systems. An industrial boiler is larger and built for high-demand applications in manufacturing, food processing, and chemical industries, where continuous steam or heat is required for production. While both types use fuels like natural gas, oil, or biomass, industrial boilers operate at higher pressures and temperatures for more intensive workloads.

The size of the boiler needed for a commercial building depends on factors like square footage, insulation, and heating demand. A common rule of thumb is 50 BTUs per square foot, meaning a 100,000 sq. ft. building may require a 5,000,000 BTU boiler. For precise sizing, it’s best to consult a professional who can assess system load, efficiency, and usage needs.

The most common industrial boiler is the fire-tube boiler, known for its durability, efficiency, and ability to handle moderate steam demands. It uses a series of tubes filled with hot gases to heat water, making it ideal for food processing, manufacturing, and chemical industries. For higher pressure and capacity needs, water-tube boilers are preferred, as they generate steam faster and operate at higher efficiency.
